Candidates need to exhibit the competence that was required for them to pass their PRINCE2® Foundation qualification, and additionally show that they can apply and tune PRINCE2® to address the needs and problems of a specific project scenario.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate a wider appreciation of PRINCE2 skills and know-how and apply this in a realistic context,
  • tailor best practice in response to different project circumstances,
  • efficiently navigate the PRINCE2 7 Official Book,
  • analyze scenarios and assess what courses of action would be effective and appropriate in accordance with PRINCE2 best practice,
  • begin to apply the PRINCE2 method to your own projects,
  • and complete the PRINCE2 Practitioner examination.

Throughout the course you will be looking at the exam and see how the marks are made up with the different learning outcomes.

Learning outcome 1

Learning outcome 1 is to analyse the application of PRINCE2 principles in context.

Here is a summary of the principles:

  • Ensure continued business justification,

  • Define roles, responsibilities, and relationships,
  • Mange by stages,
  • Mange by exception,
  • Focus on products,
  • Tailor to suit the projects.

The first part demonstrates an understanding of these specific elements for each PRINCE2 practice:

    • Business case: benefits management approach and business case, roles and responsibilities, outputs, outcomes, benefits, and dis-benefits.
    • Organizing: communication management approach, project management team structure.
    • Quality: product and project product description, quality management approach, quality register, quality planning, control, and assurance.

    • The PRINCE2 principles.
    • The effective management and associated techniques of the practice.
    • Tailoring to the project’s environment / context.

    Learning outcome 4

Learning outcome 4 is to apply and tailor relevant aspects of PRINCE2 processes in context. Learning outcome 4 is divided into two parts.

The first demonstrates an understanding of the following points, in relation to each PRINCE2 process:

    • The activities, inputs, and outputs
    • Recommended roles and responsibilities
    • How the practices may be applied

The second part demonstrates an ability to assess the following points, in relation to each PRINCE2 process:

    • The environment/context

    • The purpose and objectives of the process.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification is intended for:

  • project managers,
  • and aspiring project managers.

It is also relevant to other key staff involved in the design, development and delivery of projects, including:

  • project board members (e.g. senior responsible owners),
  • team managers (e.g. product delivery managers),
  • project assurance (e.g. business change analysts),
  • project support (e.g. Project and Programme Office personnel),
  • and operational line managers/staff.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner learning and examination is intended to assess whether a candidate can apply and tailor the PRINCE2 project management method.
A successful Practitioner candidate should, with suitable direction, be able to start applying the method to a real project but may not be sufficiently skilled to do this appropriately for all situations.

Their individual project management expertise, the complexity of the project and the support provided for the use of PRINCE2 in the work environment will all be factors that impact what the Practitioner can achieve.

The PRINCE2 Practitioner Exam format is as follows:

  • Objective testing
  • 70 questions
  • 42 marks or more required to pass (out of 70 available) – 60%
  • Two-and-a-half hours (150 minutes) duration, no additional reading time
  • Open-book examination (only the official PRINCE2® Manual)
